16 dec Agile Advent Calendar – 19 December
An Advent Calendar is a special calendar that counts the days to remind us that Christmas is approaching. This year we are counting down by sharing practices that might benefit you as Agile coach, Scrum master or Agile practitioner. Today’s tip is:
Tip 19: Retro format changes.
I call it stenciling, a team repeats a trick they have learned over and over again. Sometimes they forgot the why and how. They were taught to do it and keep doing it. Like a real stencil, each time you make a copy quality gets worse. A good example is the retrospective. I worked with teams that did this the same way over and over. When I asked them why, they explained that they just did what my predecessor had taught them to do. But that was months ago. I like to keep retrospective fresh and change the format regularly. I often rotate the moderator role within the team. I like to leave the organizing of the retro with the team but sit with the moderator to help him/her prepare. What works best for me is to have a discussion on what he/she finds an interesting topic to discuss. I start by stating that the answer you get depends on the question you ask. So together we define the retro-question and plan the retro around it. Often this led to new work forms that are fun and fit the topic.
